FEEDING & SAFETY

Real Food. Real Responsibility.

Raw feeding is about getting back to real food and feeding your pet in a way that reflects what their body was naturally designed for.

At 2 Fat Heads Raw, we believe in keeping things simple:

  • Single ingredients
  • Small batches
  • Clean sourcing
  • No fillers or artificial junk

We focus on real animal-based nutrition while encouraging safe handling and responsible feeding practices.

WHAT IS RAW FEEDING?

Raw feeding focuses on species-appropriate nutrition using real animal-based foods for dogs, cats, and ferrets.

This may include:

  • Raw muscle meat
  • Bone (when appropriate)
  • Secreting organs
  • Whole prey components
  • Variety from multiple animal sources

No mystery ingredients. No unnecessary fillers. No artificial colors or preservatives.

Many pet owners choose raw feeding to support:

  • Healthy skin and coat
  • Lean muscle development
  • Natural energy levels
  • Digestive health
  • Food variety and enrichment

Every pet is different, and feeding should always be adjusted to the individual animal.

TRANSITIONING & FEEDING

When starting raw, keep things simple.

  • Introduce new proteins gradually
  • Transition slowly when changing diets
  • Monitor stool, appetite, and energy
  • Adjust portions as needed

Balance is built over time through variety, not necessarily in every single meal.

General Feeding Starting Points

Adult Dogs: 2–3% of ideal body weight daily

Active or Working Dogs: 3–5%

Puppies: 4–10% depending on age and growth stage

Cats: Approximately 2–3% daily. Cats are obligate carnivores and require animal-based nutrition.

Ferrets: Multiple small meals daily with high protein and fat requirements.

Important Clarification

Feeding percentages are based on the amount fed daily.

Example:

  • 100 lb dog
  • Feeding 3%
  • = 3 lbs of food daily

That amount is then balanced over time through meat, bone, organ, and other food components.

Fresh water should always be available.

SAFE HANDLING MATTERS

Raw pet food should be handled with the same care as raw meat prepared in your own kitchen.

To help keep things safe:

  • Keep products frozen or refrigerated until use
  • Thaw in the refrigerator whenever possible
  • Wash hands after handling
  • Clean bowls, utensils, and surfaces thoroughly
  • Do not leave raw food sitting out for extended periods

SHIPPING & THAWING

Our products are shipped frozen with insulated packaging and cooling materials designed to maintain safe temperatures during transit.

Some softening or partial thawing may naturally occur during shipping and does not automatically indicate spoilage.

Products that arrive:

  • Refrigerated or cold upon arrival
  • Partially thawed but still cold
  • Containing small ice crystals or remaining frozen areas

are generally considered safe to refrigerate, refreeze, or use.

Do NOT use products that:

  • Arrive at unsafe temperatures
  • Feel warm for an extended period
  • Have a strong foul odor
  • Show signs of spoilage, leakage, or improper handling

After thawing:

  • Keep refrigerated
  • Use within an appropriate timeframe
  • Avoid repeated thawing and refreezing whenever possible

For best quality and safety, products should be transferred to a freezer or refrigerator immediately after delivery.

KNOW YOUR PET

Your pet will tell you a lot if you pay attention.

Monitor:

  • Stool quality
  • Appetite
  • Energy levels
  • Weight
  • Skin and coat condition

Adjust feeding as needed based on your individual pet.

If your pet has existing medical conditions or dietary sensitivities, consult your veterinarian before making major dietary changes.

FAQs

Commonly Asked Questions

How do I transition my pet to raw food?

Start slowly over 7–10 days by mixing small amounts of raw food into your pet’s current diet, then gradually increasing the raw portion.

How much raw food should I feed my dog?

A common starting point is 2–3% of your dog’s ideal body weight per day, but activity level, age, breed, and metabolism all matter.

Can cats eat raw food?

Yes. Cats are obligate carnivores and often do very well on properly balanced raw diets.

How long can raw food stay out at room temperature?

As a general rule, raw food should not sit out for extended periods. Remove uneaten food promptly.

Can I refreeze raw pet food after thawing?

If the product has remained refrigerated and cold throughout thawing, refreezing may be possible. Texture may change, but safety is the priority.

What if my pet has a sensitive stomach?

Transition slowly, start with simple proteins, and consult your pet's healthcare provider if your pet has known digestive or medical concerns.

What should raw pet food smell like?

Fresh raw food should smell like fresh meat. If it develops an unusual odor, slime, or discoloration, do not feed it.
